Brighton Pride 2010

It's the Brighton Pride Parade tomorrow, which means this is one of the city's busiest weekends. The parade sets off from the seafront by the pier (Madeira Drive) at 11am and travels through the town before ending up at Preston Park a couple of hours later.

If you're heading to the parade and are arriving by train, do pop in to The Laine Deli for a cup of coffee, a cake or a sandwich. We're towards the top of Trafalgar Street, which is the road that runs under the front of the station - and we have a lovely outside patio if the sun's shining!

Christmas coffee

Coffee syrups signMany of the UK's 'traditional' Christmas celebrations aren't as old as you might think. For example, there's the Christmas tree - made popular by Queen Victoria - and Santa Claus, who only adopted his current red-suited form in the 19th century.

Which made us wonder: how long before the Gingerbread Latte becomes a traditional festive drink?

Anyway, if you'd like a warming Gingerbread latte (with or without whipped cream) - or a coffee that's flavoured with festive 'toasted marshmallow' syrup - we're happy to oblige. And you'll find our regular range of flavoured syrups available as well.

Coffee art

We think that making a decent cup of coffee is something of an art. But then we discovered an American woman who's taken coffee art to a new level. Karen Eland paints using espresso. That's right - she uses coffee. Most of her coffee pictures are painted in her local coffee shop and are coffee-themed interpretations of classic artworks.

Brighton is full of (coffee) beans

Research carried out in the UK by the Local Data Company has revealed that Brighton is home to 121 coffee shops - the largest number of coffee shops per shopper outside London. There are now 11,805 coffee shops across the country, with 70% run independently (just like The Laine Deli).

Flat white coffee

A cappuccino, not a flat white!Recently we've had a few people ask us for a "flat white" coffee which - if you're not familiar with it - isn't as simple as the name suggests. The flat white is rather like a latte but with less milk and no (or hardly any) foam. Or, from another perspective, it's an espresso with steamed milk on top - which makes it a little like a macchiato but with the creamy part of the milk insted of the foam. A flat white is usually served in a cappuccino cup... well, anyway, that's what we do!

Calling all loyal customers

The Laine Deli loyalty cardWe've mentioned our loyalty card before - but we wouldn't want you to miss out, so we thought we'd mention it again. Pick one up and ask us to stamp it every time you buy a coffee. When you've collected eight stamps we'll give you your next coffee completely free. That's a free coffee every fortnight for our weekday visitors!

The Americano

We've previously talked about the cappuccino, the espresso macchiato and our fondness for Lavazza beans. Now it's the turn of the americano.

Americano at The Laine DeliThe Caffè Americano is simply an espresso with hot water added. The result is a black coffee that can be served with or without milk. If you're after "a normal cup of coffee", this is the one for you. It's the closest in strength to filter or instant coffee, except it's fresh and therefore has a different (we'd say considerably better!) flavour.

Under pressure

Coffee machine pressure gaugeIt's hard not to become a little obsessed about coffee when you're making it all day. Did you know that the average espresso is produced using pressure of 9 bar (around 130 pounds of pressure per square inch)?

That's nine times the pressure of the earth's atmosphere!

Espresso Macchiato

The Macchiato can be a confusing coffee. These days when someone orders one, they usually expect an espresso with a little foamed milk on top. But that's not always been the case. The caffe macchiato (or Lavazza coffee menuespresso macchiato) was originally served with a tiny amount of milk - rather like a small, strong white coffee. More recently, the milk has been replaced by foam, making it look like a little cappuccino. Incidentally, the Italian word macchiato means 'marked'... and that's led to some confusion with the latte macchiato - almost the opposite of a caffe macchiato. The caffe macchiato is espresso with a little milk, the latte macchiato is milk with a little espresso!

Call in to The Laine Deli and we'll serve the macchiato that most people expect: an espresso with a foamed milk 'hat'. But we're also happy to make any coffee exactly as you ask - so don't worry if you'd like your macchiato slightly different from everyone else.

Service, please!

Coffee machineAs cars become increasingly complex, so the number of people servicing their own cars has fallen. The same is true of coffee machines, we're sure. Fortunately, ours is a traditional design... which meant we were able to tinker under the bonnet at the weekend. And we resisted the temptation to add go-faster stripes down the side!

Can coffee improve your memory?

A couple of cappuccinos every day could reverse memory problems, according to reports in the news today. Initial results from tests at the University of Florida seem to suggest that two decent coffees each day might protect against the development of memory problems and could also reverse existing signs of memory impairment. There's more about the positive effects of caffeine on the BBC website, which says more research is needed before we'll know exactly what we should be doing... but meanwhile, why not ask for an extra shot of expresso in your latte?

Running latte

Running latte: defined by UrbanDictionary.com as "showing up late to work because you stopped for coffee along the way".

It's hot!

Iced coffee and iced teaWe're feeling hot, hot, hot here in the heart of Brighton. Summer is upon us, so we've added a couple of cool drinks to our menu. We're now offering iced coffee (made with those Lavazza beans we're so fond of) and iced tea with mint for anyone who needs to chill out.

Bean here before

Last month we mentioned that the wholesale price of coffee was reported to be going up because of crop shortages caused by heavy rain in South America. We've recently bought a batch of coffee beans... and it looks as though bean prices are definitely starting to rise. We don't want to increase our coffee prices (and we know you'd agree!) but we don't want to compromise on our coffee quality or cup size either.

At the moment we use Lavazza coffee; it's a company that has been blending coffee since the early 1900s and, just as importantly, is committed to sustainable development in the places it sources, roasts and blends its coffee.

We also only offer a single size of coffee cup. We're not fans of calling medium-sized cups "small" and then selling you a "regular size" bucket of coffee that's big enough to bathe in.

As we said earlier, we don't want to increase our prices - and we'll do our best to keep them as low as possible - but we might need to make some changes in the future. It all depends what happens when we buy our next batch of beans. Thank you for your support; we'll let you know what's going on with coffee prices as soon as we find out!

Coffee shortage to be followed by tea shortage?

First we were warned about a possible coffee shortage. Now the papers are talking about problems with tea production. It's heavy rain that's affected coffee growers, whilst droughts have caused the tea shortages. However, these tea shortages were first reported by the BBC back in March... so it all seems like a bit of a storm in a teacup (sorry!) to us.

Is there a coffee shortage on the way?

There was a bit of bad news from Management Today yesterday. (Yes, we read the business press occasionally!)

Apparently the wholesale price of coffee is going up - and the price of sugar is increasing, too. It's mainly down to crop shortages caused by dodgy weather. We've not heard anything from our suppliers, so we're hoping the shortage won't mean any price increases for our customers. In fact, at the moment it's possible to pay even less than usual for your daily cappuccino, latte, espresso or americano from The Laine Deli. Pick up one of our travel mugs and you'll save 10p a cup... then pick up one of our loyalty cards and you'll get every 9th cup completely free!

Alfresco dining

Coffee at The Laine DeliWe've previously mentioned our Outside Catering... but here's a different perspective on that phrase. The Laine Deli has a patio that catches the sun when it's out - and it's also protected by a canopy when the weather becomes a bit dodgy. (Not that we ever have dodgy weather in Brighton, of course!)

So treat yourself to a coffee and enjoy some Mediterranean-style living on the corner of Trafalgar Street and Kensington Place.

The Laine Deli Loyalty Card

The Laine Deli loyalty cardWe love our coffee machine. It's an Italian work of art. And we love our Italian coffee, too. Together they're a persuasive combination. We've now added a third ingredient to clinch the deal: The Laine Deli loyalty card. Make sure we stamp it every time you buy a coffee. Collect eight stamps and we'll give you your next coffee completely free. It's as simple as that!

Open for business

The Laine Deli is open again after four frantic days of decorating, cleaning, baking and paperwork. The paint is now out of our hair - at least, we think it's all gone! - and the deli is back in business. So, before our breakfast customers arrive, there's just time to introduce our most important non-human member of staff: Rancilio, the coffee machine. Italian, of course.
