Our Christmas break

Christmas opening timesMany of our customers come from local businesses in the North Laine area of Brighton - and many of them will be taking a break between Christmas and the New Year. So we've decided to do the same.

After all, Monday and Friday next week are bank holidays. We're adding Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday to the list and will be open again on Monday 4th January 2010.

A very merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all our customers!

Tuesday 22 December 2009

Just a couple of days to Christmas!

We're getting very excited about Christmas - but we're not closing the shop to go shopping!

The Laine Deli will be open on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th December as usual, although we'll probably finish a little earlier than usual on Christmas Eve. That means we'll be here as usual for your breakfast, for your mid-morning coffee and your lunch. We also still have a few Christmas gifts left, including tree decorations, pannetone and chocolates.

Friday 11 December 2009

Brighton artists open their houses at Christmas

Earlier this year we mentioned the Brighton Artists Open Houses event, which took place as part of the Brighton Festival. There's also an AOH festival for Christmas - in fact, it's the seventh one this year - and there's one weekend left. Tomorrow and Sunday (12th and 13th December) you can see paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery and loads of other locally-produced art... including cards and hand-made Christmas decorations. There are 75 venues in and around Brighton & Hove; the closest to us are Ourhouse, On Your Marks and Six; all just up the hill to the west of Queens Road and Brighton station.

Wednesday 9 December 2009

We'll help you make time for breakfast

There's nothing like a good breakfast to start the day. Unfortunately, standing in the kitchen on a cold winter morning isn't always very inspiring.

That's why we offer a wide-ranging breakfast menu to take away. Whether you're after porridge, toast, muesli or crumpets, you can pick it up from The Laine Deli. And - of course - we'll cook you a 'full English' or a breakfast baguette if you fancy something a little more substantial.

Jacket potatoes

If ever there was a month made for baked potatoes, it would be December!

The tradition of the takeaway baked or 'jacket' potato can be traced back to the 19th century when they were sold by street traders. You'd see hundreds of men with 'potato cans' across London selling baked potatoes throughout the autumn and winter. "Many gentlefolks buy them in the street, and take them home for supper in their pockets; but the working classes are the greatest purchasers" wrote Henry Mayhew in the 1840s.

Our potatoes are oven-cooked... and, unlike the Victorians, you don't need to take them home in your pockets!

Saturday 5 December 2009

Christmas Chocolates

We all like a bit of chocolate at The Laine Deli. That's one of the reasons you'll find plenty of chocolate gifts in the shop this month. Some of our favourites come from The Chocolate Alchemist, which is an award-winning organic chocolate manufacturer based in West Sussex. So whether you're looking for a Christmas stocking filler for children, a foodie gift for a friend or something to cheer you up when you're Christmas shopping, pop in and take a look at our selection of plain chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate goodies!

Friday 4 December 2009

Christmas Panettone

PanettonePanettone is a type of Italian bread that originated in Milan and has been associated with Christmas for around two hundred years. We've tracked down a variety of small panettone loaves in little boxes. They'll make a tasty gift, a novel Christmas tree decoration or even a pre-Christmas treat!

Wednesday 2 December 2009

Christmas Robin

The robin has been a symbol of Christmas for many years. We have our own collection at The Laine Deli - and they're all for sale. Each robin is hand-made by a local artist and would make a lovely little gift (or an equally lovely Christmas tree decoration for yourself!)

Take home your own unique robin for just £4. Alternatively, you can pick a family of three for only £10.

Monday 30 November 2009

It's officially Christmas at The Laine Deli!

Christmas treeWhen should you put your Christmas decorations up?

That's a good question - and one that's often a hot topic for shops. Too soon and you'll have customers muttering "it gets earlier every year". Too late and the same customers will probably claim you're related to Scrooge!

Well, we made a start this weekend. We've already catered for one Christmas event and have a couple of others lined up this week, so we reckoned it was about time The Laine Deli acquired some Christmas sparkle. We also have some lovely Christmassy gifts... but we'll tell you more about them in the next few days.

Christmas coffee

Coffee syrups signMany of the UK's 'traditional' Christmas celebrations aren't as old as you might think. For example, there's the Christmas tree - made popular by Queen Victoria - and Santa Claus, who only adopted his current red-suited form in the 19th century.

Which made us wonder: how long before the Gingerbread Latte becomes a traditional festive drink?

Anyway, if you'd like a warming Gingerbread latte (with or without whipped cream) - or a coffee that's flavoured with festive 'toasted marshmallow' syrup - we're happy to oblige. And you'll find our regular range of flavoured syrups available as well.

Thursday 19 November 2009

Christmas is coming

Christmas is still just over a month away but we're in a festive mood. That's because we've already started arranging the food for office parties and end-of-year lunches. And even if you're not celebrating Christmas at work, we can help with a few seasonal goodies. Perhaps a turkey and cranberry ciabatta for lunch... some chocolate stocking-fillers... or even (coming very soon!) a mince pie. Go on, treat yourself!

Coffee art

We think that making a decent cup of coffee is something of an art. But then we discovered an American woman who's taken coffee art to a new level. Karen Eland paints using espresso. That's right - she uses coffee. Most of her coffee pictures are painted in her local coffee shop and are coffee-themed interpretations of classic artworks.

Tuesday 3 November 2009

A different perspective

We Need To TalkEagle-eyed customers will notice that we've removed the photographic prints from our walls and have introduced a new (borrowed) artwork. It's called "We Need To Talk" by Hugh McLeod and currently hangs at the back of the deli.

Monday 2 November 2009

Brighton is full of (coffee) beans

Research carried out in the UK by the Local Data Company has revealed that Brighton is home to 121 coffee shops - the largest number of coffee shops per shopper outside London. There are now 11,805 coffee shops across the country, with 70% run independently (just like The Laine Deli).

Roadworks on Trafalgar Street

The top end of Trafalgar Street is closed at the moment because there's some resurfacing work going on at Frederick Place. (That's the one-way street before you pass under the railway station). And if you've been listening to the traffic news on the local radio, you'll now know that Trafalgar Street is also known as the B2119. Anyway, it's all due to finish this Friday -so we're hoping everything will soon be back to normal.

Saturday 31 October 2009

Happy Halloweekend!

Pumpkin cakeHallowe'en on a Saturday? Then it must be "halloweekend"!

As you'd expect, we've been baking some hallowe'en-themed cakes for our younger (and not-so-young) customers. This pumpkin face is a soft flapjack with orange and black icing... so it's not really scary at all.

Friday 23 October 2009

Pumpkin time!

Slindon pumpkinsHallowe'en is approaching, which means it's time for pumpkins - and pumpkin carving. We're planning to create a few pumpkin table decorations for The Laine Deli, which is why we recently took time to head over the border and did some shopping in the little West Sussex village of Slindon. It's been described as the pumpkin capital of Britain... and rightly so, because the Upton family have been growing and displaying pumpkins there for many years. Sadly Mr Upton senior died earlier this year at the age of 87, so the 2009 display has been created by a team including son Robin and long-time colleague Tony Smith. It's an impressive tribute - and the family plans to continue the pumpkin tradition.

Flat white coffee

A cappuccino, not a flat white!Recently we've had a few people ask us for a "flat white" coffee which - if you're not familiar with it - isn't as simple as the name suggests. The flat white is rather like a latte but with less milk and no (or hardly any) foam. Or, from another perspective, it's an espresso with steamed milk on top - which makes it a little like a macchiato but with the creamy part of the milk insted of the foam. A flat white is usually served in a cappuccino cup... well, anyway, that's what we do!

Saturday 3 October 2009

Chocolate and banana muffins

Chocoate and banana muffinsEvery day at The Laine Deli is different. Sometimes we're busy - as we have been with the Labour Party Conference in town this week - and sometimes it's a little quieter, which gives us time to chat with our customers. Either way, it's all good. And occasionally there's time to try something new... which is when we created these banana and chocolate muffins!

The Sussex Food Awards

Vote in the Sussex Food & Drink Awards

We've almost run out of cards and leaflets for the Sussex Food Awards 2009/2010, so we thought we'd mention it online again. This is the fourth year the competition has run - and as well as voting for your favourite Sussex eating experience (which is the category we're in) you can also vote for your favourite farmer, food producer, drink producer, food shop, young chef, butcher and farmers' market.

It's not entirely altruistic, either - if you vote you'll be entered into a prize draw to win two tickets to the Sussex Food & Drink Awards dinner in January 2010.

Saturday 26 September 2009

Planning for winter

Well, we passed the autumnal equinox this week, which means summer's officially behind us. And it's the last weekend in September, too. Fortunately the sun's shining today, so it doesn't feel much like autumn - and we've just heard something that's bound to lift our spirits when winter finally arrives. Apparently there are plans to bring a temporary ice rink to the Royal Pavilion gardens for Christmas. Our fingers are crossed... and we'll be heading there with a mug of hot chocolate as soon as it opens!

Friday 25 September 2009

Calling all loyal customers

The Laine Deli loyalty cardWe've mentioned our loyalty card before - but we wouldn't want you to miss out, so we thought we'd mention it again. Pick one up and ask us to stamp it every time you buy a coffee. When you've collected eight stamps we'll give you your next coffee completely free. That's a free coffee every fortnight for our weekday visitors!

Hello, blondie

Here at The Laine Deli we're big fans of the chocolate brownie... but did you realise it has a lesser-known relative called the 'blondie'?
Chocolate brownies
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a 'blondie' isn't just a woman with blonde hair. It's also a small square cake that has a cream or golden colour. You'll find that a blondie has the same dense texture as a brownie but isn't usually chocolate flavoured.

And that ends today's lesson. Class dismissed!

Friday 18 September 2009

WhiteAir 09

WhiteAir 09 takes place this weekend in Brighton. It's a festival that combines extreme sports and music on Brighton seafront. There's a good collection of local bands, including Brighton's British Sea Power... and there'll be plenty of action to watch or participate in, with the RAF Red Arrows expected this morning and the RAF Falcons parachute team arriving on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Wednesday 16 September 2009

Brighton graffiti

Brighton's developed quite a reputation for graffiti, with much of it authorised by the city council and local property owners. Cityclean is the council department responsible for removing anti-social graffiti... and it's also responsible for working with local aerosol artists to decorate a number of approved sites.

There's plenty of graffiti art to see within a short walk from The Laine Deli. A couple of minutes up the hill is the Prince Albert pub, with its famous Banksy "kissing policemen" image, while a wander down Kensington Street will reveal some of the city's largest artworks.

Outside catering for Brighton & Hove

Small cakes
As we've mentioned before, we're not just a delicatessen - and we're not just a coffee shop. We're also ideally placed for catering to businesses in Brighton. We can supply a wide variety of food for corporate lunches and working breakfasts. In fact, The Laine Deli will handle all kinds of events, whether you're organising sandwiches for a birthday tea or custom cakes for a product launch. Call in and ask for more details, or telephone Natasha on Brighton 686665.

Friday 11 September 2009

The Americano

We've previously talked about the cappuccino, the espresso macchiato and our fondness for Lavazza beans. Now it's the turn of the americano.

Americano at The Laine DeliThe Caffè Americano is simply an espresso with hot water added. The result is a black coffee that can be served with or without milk. If you're after "a normal cup of coffee", this is the one for you. It's the closest in strength to filter or instant coffee, except it's fresh and therefore has a different (we'd say considerably better!) flavour.

Tuesday 8 September 2009

Coronation Chicken: the result

You may not remember - but back in May we were wondering about adding the curried magic of Coronation Chicken to our sandwich menu. Well, we've done it. In fact, it's been a regular fixture for a few weeks now.

Friday 4 September 2009

Just a couple of minutes from Brighton station

We've previously described The Laine Deli as being just a couple of minutes from the railway station - and now we have proof!

Take a look at this video, which shows a (slightly erratic!) walk from the station to our coffee shop in just two-and-a-half minutes.

Tuesday 1 September 2009

Under pressure

Coffee machine pressure gaugeIt's hard not to become a little obsessed about coffee when you're making it all day. Did you know that the average espresso is produced using pressure of 9 bar (around 130 pounds of pressure per square inch)?

That's nine times the pressure of the earth's atmosphere!

Friday 28 August 2009

Espresso Macchiato

The Macchiato can be a confusing coffee. These days when someone orders one, they usually expect an espresso with a little foamed milk on top. But that's not always been the case. The caffe macchiato (or Lavazza coffee menuespresso macchiato) was originally served with a tiny amount of milk - rather like a small, strong white coffee. More recently, the milk has been replaced by foam, making it look like a little cappuccino. Incidentally, the Italian word macchiato means 'marked'... and that's led to some confusion with the latte macchiato - almost the opposite of a caffe macchiato. The caffe macchiato is espresso with a little milk, the latte macchiato is milk with a little espresso!

Call in to The Laine Deli and we'll serve the macchiato that most people expect: an espresso with a foamed milk 'hat'. But we're also happy to make any coffee exactly as you ask - so don't worry if you'd like your macchiato slightly different from everyone else.

Tuesday 25 August 2009

A nice cup of tea

Pots of teaHere at The Laine Deli we like a nice cup of tea. So we thought we'd take a moment to explain what that weird one is at the bottom of the list. (Unless you already know, in which case it's probably not weird to you).

It's sometimes spelled rooibos, rooibosh or rooibosch - and it's often called "redbush" here in the UK. Redbush tea is grown in South Africa and is naturally caffeine-free. It's also low in tannin, has a slightly nutty taste and can be served with or without milk.

Tyrrell's Potato Chips

Potato chips, not crisps! There are those who would say a sandwich isn't a proper lunch without a packet of crisps. While we wouldn't condone a diet that's too high in fried potato, we've done our best to make sure we sell decent crisps. Actually, we don't sell crisps at all - we sell Tyrrells Potato Chips. Their potatoes are sliced and then cooked without removing the starch, which improves the taste and means they absorb less oil than other crisps.

And Tyrrell's is our kind of business, too. Not only are they fans of smaller businesses - as their headline-hitting battle a few years showed - they're also pretty innovative. Tyrrell's potatoes are now being used for making vodka as well as for their chips!

Thursday 13 August 2009

You're the inspiration

The Laine Deli bookshelfWe were thinking the other day about the people who'd inspired us to open The Laine Deli. There's family and friends, of course - and then there are other people who don't even know who we are. For example, Peter Jones offered encouragement in a radio interview by saying the current recession was a great time for young people to start their own business. Then there are all the 'big name' chefs we enjoy: Jamie, Nigella, Bill Grainger and Gordon Ramsay, to name a few. But now that we're here, what really keeps us going is the feedback from our customers. We wouldn't be happy if we weren't making you happy as well.

Monday 10 August 2009

Service, please!

Coffee machineAs cars become increasingly complex, so the number of people servicing their own cars has fallen. The same is true of coffee machines, we're sure. Fortunately, ours is a traditional design... which meant we were able to tinker under the bonnet at the weekend. And we resisted the temptation to add go-faster stripes down the side!

Monday 3 August 2009

Secret ingredient

We've mentioned our Rocky Road before; it's a cake (although some people try to convince themselves it's just a biscuit!) that contains milk chocolate, marshmallows and crushed biscuits... with proportions and a few other ingredients that we're keeping to ourselves. But for those of you trying to recreate our recipe at home, here's an extra clue. The secret's out - you need some Golden Syrup.

Pride Beside The Seaside!

This year's Brighton Pride summer festival started on Saturday 25th July and runs until Sunday 2nd August, with the main parade and park event taking place tomorrow, Saturday 1st August.

With up to 200,000 people expected to attend, the Pride Carnival Parade is one of Brighton's biggest summer events. The parade assembles at Madeira Drive from 11am, travelling along the seafront to West Street and then up to the clock tower. From there it's down North Street, turning left onto the Old Steine past the Pavilion, then up to London Road and finally Preston Park. The carnival in the park runs until 8pm (although other events in town keep going through the night!)

Banksy in Brighton

Banksy policemen graffitiThe other day we mentioned the Banksy graffiti on the side of the Prince Albert pub - and, in a minor coincidence, a couple of tourists called in at the weekend to ask where it was.

Well, the pub's on the same side of the road as us but is further up the hill on the corner of Frederick Place. On the side is Banksy's work, protected under a sheet of plastic.

The Laine Deli... not the Lane Deli

SeagullAs we're sure you've noticed, there's an "i" in "Laine". That's because we're in the North Laine area of Brighton. But what's that "i" doing there, we hear you ask?

Well, we've done a bit more historical research. Laine is an old word for a plot of farming land: a type of field, really. There's some debate about whether it's simply another way of spelling "lane" - and no-one's really sure whether it was once "North Laines" instead - but this unusual word has been applied to the North Laine area for hundreds of years. These days North Laine is officially singular and, as any local resident will proudly tell you, isn't anything to do with "The Lanes" that border North Street in the middle of the town!

Wednesday 22 July 2009

The world's largest cupcake

Giant cupcakeThis is not the world's largest cupcake. It is, however, pretty big. It's our 'giant cupcake' celebration cake that'll serve up to 14 people - and it's available as part of our Outside Catering service for all kinds of events, including corporate breakfasts, business lunches and birthday parties.

If you're after the world's largest cupcake, you've just missed your chance. A shopping mall in the US city of Minneapolis has recently been displaying a 151-pound monster cake that was 2-foot wide, had 15 pounds of fudge filling and was covered in 60 pounds of yellow icing. Alas, despite being a 68kg record breaker, no-one was allowed to eat the cake... which was given to a local pig farm.

Our quarterly report

We were pretty excited when we'd been open for one month - and we were just as excited after our second month. We've now been at 31 Trafalgar Street for a quarter of a year, which is even more exciting. Thank you for being part of the excitement!

Friday 17 July 2009

Trafalgar Street

The Laine Deli is towards the top of Trafalgar Street in the North Laine area of Brighton. We often describe the road as "the one that runs underneath the front of the railway station" but - having looked into the local history of the area - that's not always been the case.

It was originally known as Trafalgar Place and just started off with a few houses at the bottom of the hill. When Brighton got its railway station in 1841 the road became busier, with more houses and shops added - and soon there was a bridge across the top of the road.

Incidentally, the Prince Albert pub at the top of the road has (like the station) been around since the 1840s. It's the one with the Banksy graffiti and the John Peel mural. If you're interested in more local history, there's much more about the area on the North Laine Community Association website.

Wednesday 15 July 2009

Soup

Soup at The Laine DeliWe think soup is one of those foods that's great whatever the weather. Rather like a nice cup of tea - warming in the winter, refreshing in the summer - it's become a popular choice with our customers through sun and rain. And as you'd expect, our "soup of the day" is always home-made.

Tuesday 14 July 2009

Raw cola - a new recruit to our fridge

Avid fridge-watchers (yes, we know who you are!) may have spotted a new arrival at The Laine Deli. It's Raw cola, which is made from natural ingredients by Pepsi. It doesn't have artificial flavours, artificial sweetners or artificial colours - and that makes it sound pretty appealing, we think.

Monday 13 July 2009

A local perspective

There's a lot of talk these days about 'food miles' and carbon footprints. It's not just a question of environmental awareness and supporting local businesses; it's common sense as well. The less travelling your food does, the fresher it arrives. That's why we're doing our best to source fresh fruit and vegetables locally when we can. It's not always practical to do it for everything - some things just won't grow in the UK! - but we're always on the lookout for good local produce whenever it's available. And if you'd like to know more about any of our ingredients, we're always happy to answer your questions.

Saturday 11 July 2009

A new menu at The Laine Deli

Can coffee improve your memory?

A couple of cappuccinos every day could reverse memory problems, according to reports in the news today. Initial results from tests at the University of Florida seem to suggest that two decent coffees each day might protect against the development of memory problems and could also reverse existing signs of memory impairment. There's more about the positive effects of caffeine on the BBC website, which says more research is needed before we'll know exactly what we should be doing... but meanwhile, why not ask for an extra shot of expresso in your latte?

It's hot!

Iced coffee and iced teaWe're feeling hot, hot, hot here in the heart of Brighton. Summer is upon us, so we've added a couple of cool drinks to our menu. We're now offering iced coffee (made with those Lavazza beans we're so fond of) and iced tea with mint for anyone who needs to chill out.

It's our two-month anniversary

The Laine Deli, BrightonHow time flies!

We've now been here at The Laine Deli in Brighton for two months. A big 'thank you' to all our customers, our suppliers and our friendly neighbours in the North Laine area.

Friday 19 June 2009

Phone ahead!

The Laine Deli: plate with crumbsWe usually close The Laine Deli at around 4pm Monday to Friday and at 3.30pm on Saturdays, which means we're still open when many of Brighton's early risers are heading home from work. If you'd like to make sure we've got something for your dinner (or even just a slice of your favourite cake!), feel free to call us on Brighton 686665 and we'll make sure we don't run out of whatever you fancy.

The difference between a flapjack and a muesli bar

Raspberry Muesli Bar at The Laine DeliWhat's the difference between a raspberry flapjack and a raspberry muesli bar?

Both are full of fruity, oaty goodness - but we reckon the museli bar has a little more 'crunch'. The secret is in the recipe... and we're going to keep it a secret, too!

Friday 12 June 2009

Looking forward to the weekend

The Laine DeliThe Laine Deli is a different place on Saturdays. Instead of catering to our regular weekday customers with their busy lunchtimes, we're mainly visited by shoppers and tourists looking for somewhere they can sit down and enjoy a break.

Fortunately, we have exactly what our weekend visitors need. We're on the corner of Trafalgar Street and Kensington Place with a large patio area outside plus seating indoors. See you soon!

On the cards

Although we're often told that the days of cash are numbered, it's still one of the easiest and most-widespread ways of paying for small transactions. But it's not always convenient... and even though we're happy to take cheques, they're rapidly going the way of the dodo, the CD single and the free parking space. That's why we've just taken delivery of a 'chip-and-PIN' credit card and debit card machine. Whether you're buying lunch, ordering a cake or placing an order for your business, you can now keep your money in your wallet.

Thursday 4 June 2009

Bean here before

Last month we mentioned that the wholesale price of coffee was reported to be going up because of crop shortages caused by heavy rain in South America. We've recently bought a batch of coffee beans... and it looks as though bean prices are definitely starting to rise. We don't want to increase our coffee prices (and we know you'd agree!) but we don't want to compromise on our coffee quality or cup size either.

At the moment we use Lavazza coffee; it's a company that has been blending coffee since the early 1900s and, just as importantly, is committed to sustainable development in the places it sources, roasts and blends its coffee.

We also only offer a single size of coffee cup. We're not fans of calling medium-sized cups "small" and then selling you a "regular size" bucket of coffee that's big enough to bathe in.

As we said earlier, we don't want to increase our prices - and we'll do our best to keep them as low as possible - but we might need to make some changes in the future. It all depends what happens when we buy our next batch of beans. Thank you for your support; we'll let you know what's going on with coffee prices as soon as we find out!

Sunday 31 May 2009

Summer sun, something’s begun...

Brighton's an exciting place to be all year round - and we're honestly not just saying that because we work here! - but it really comes into its own in the summer. Visitors arrive from across the UK (and the world) to sit on the beach, walk along the pier and see the Royal Pavilion. So here's an idea. If you're here for a few days and fancy a picnic on the beach, why not pop in to The Laine Deli and ask us to make you one? Order it in advance and we'll have everything ready for you to pick up on your way down to the seafront.

Saturday 23 May 2009

A quiet Bank Holiday

The 43rd Brighton Festival comes to an end on Sunday, so we reckon there won't be much happening in our neighbourhood... which is why we're taking Bank Holiday Monday as a rare day off. Enjoy the weekend; we'll see you at 8am on Tuesday.

Friday 22 May 2009

Jamie's on his way

Recipease during shop fittingJamie Oliver, 'naked chef' and already owner of one Brighton restaurant - Jamie's Italian - is opening his second venture in the city on Monday. Recipease combines a food shop with a kitchen shop and a cookery school. It sounds a great idea; we spotted the shop being fitted out a few weeks ago when walking down Western Road. And Jamie, if you're ever in the North Laine area, we'd love to see you for a coffee and a piece of cake!
